Online application, teacher recommendations, semester report card 2012–13 High School Course Catalog Now OnlineThe high school course catalog for the 2012–13 school year is now available online. The catalog provides information about available courses and support services, and can serve as a resource throughout the school year. As soon as the paper copies arrive in the school, I will be visiting the 8th grade classes to introduce the catalog to the students. Look for your students copy to come home in a few weeks! The catalog can be accessed on the School Division’s Web site at www.pwcs.edu. Select the drop-down menu under “Students,” then choose “High School Course Catalog", or you can find it on this webpage under Files. EngineerGirl! Essay ContestThe National Academy of Engineering’s EngineerGirl! Web site is designed to spark the curiosity of young people, girls in particular, and encourage them to consider careers in engineering. The organization also sponsors an engineering essay contest for students. The contest for this year invites students in grades 3–12 to write on the topic of food engineering to compete for cash prizes. Visit the EngineerGirl! Web site for guidelines and related information or contact Victoria Gunderson, Ph.D., Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Fellow, National Academy of Engineering, at vgunderson@nae.edu. The essay contest deadline is March 1.

Applicants to the Center for International Studies and Languages (CISL) If you are applying to the Center for International Studies and Languages at Hylton HS, please write a 200-word essay that addresses your personal experience with other cultures, your interest in international affairs, and your future goals. Please e-mail this essay to holtmh@pwcs.edu with - CISL Application Essay - in the Subject Line. While not required with applications to the CISL program, recommendations from two of the student's current teachers are strongly encouraged, preferably in two of the following subject areas: language arts, history and social sciences, and world languages. The recommendation form can be found at www.cdhylton.com or at C.D. Hylton High School. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS (APS): Applicants to the Advanced Placement Scholars Programs: If you are applying to the Advanced Placement Scholars Programs at Patriot HS or Woodbridge HS, please complete the following application essay. Write a 200-word essay that addresses why you are applying to the Advanced Placement Scholars program and identify the advantages you feel this program will provide you in the future. For Patriot HS PLTW or for Woodbridge HS PLTW, after you complete the on-line application, please download the supplemental application at the Patriot or Woodbridge school Web page. Complete the supplemental application and submit through your school counseling department NO EARLIER than February 1st 2012. You may also complete the PLTW application totally on paper if you prefer. Applications for TRANSFER students are due on Wednesday, February 15, 2012. Applications for students living WITHIN THE SCHOOL BOUNDARY are due no later than Friday, March 16, 2012. Castro at castroca@pwcs.edu High School Specialty Program Application InformationNew this year for students applying to Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) high school specialty programs is an easy-to-use online application. Specialty programs offer a wide variety of additional course options and rigor embedded within the programs. Students residing in Prince William County on January 1 must submit the required application form by February 15 to be considered for admission to a specialty program.
The applicant can identify more than one specialty program for which to be considered, but the choices need to be indicated in order of preference. If applicants change their minds on the order of preference for their program choices before the registration deadline of February 15, the application will need to be resubmitted and the most recent application submitted will be considered. Each application receives a time/date stamp. GENERAL APPLICATION DEADLINE: WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2012
Fine and Performing Arts applications are due on Tuesday, January 17, 2012. For current Prince William County School students, your completion of this application grants permission to review your semester report card. All non-PWCS students will need to forward a copy of their semester report card to Specialty Program Coordinator(s) at the requested school(s). If you are a transfer student, remember that you will need to complete and submit the required transfer form. This form is available at any Prince William County School. Transportation request forms will be included in Specialty Program acceptance letters. They must be returned no later than March 30, 2012. School Counseling Department Files
